Finally Table Tennis VR

Can you really get a workout from Table Tennis? This new VR version says you can!

This is a VR fitness website, but the ironic part about the fitness found in VR is that it often doesn’t come from sports. Usually, it comes from first person shooters and action rpg games that require you to swing swords. Therefore, we finally have some sports games to talk about and it happens to be my favorite, albeit I will be unbiased in my review of Table Tennis VR.

What is Table Tennis VR?

Table Tennis, otherwise referred to as Ping Pong, is where you take two paddles give them to two people and make them hit a ball until someone doesn’t hit the ball thereby gaining a point. Table Tennis VR embodies this down to the core and it is definitely not a new concept and it’s actually kind of bland when compared to other games like HoloBall, which has four walls acting as four tables.

Graphics and Visuals 4/5

Since you’re inside of a single room, there’s not much to the actual graphics for this game but the room does have some personality to it. An example of this is that the window that is halfway open will allow the ball through it inside of acting like a wall. The scoreboard is an actual board on the wall, which is better than the standard scoreboard hanging on your face. When you play this game, it actually feels as though you are playing Table Tennis and not a cheap knockoff.

Hardware Requirements 4/5

The hardware requirements aren’t that bad and it is compatible with the Oculus and the Vive. You only need 4GB RAM and 500 MB of space, which is incredibly low in comparison with most VR games. You will need your standard Intel i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 with an Nvidia GeForce GTX970 or an AMD Radeon R9 290. This is relatively low requirements when comparing it to other games on the market.

Fitness 4/5

The first selling point of this game is that it is an actual sports game, which is relatively shocking in the VR community due to its rarity. Needless to say, fitness is what the game focuses on. The second selling point is that you can either play against someone else or you can take the “Waves” challenge to face off against the computer with increasing difficulty. More importantly, the game is something you can play if you are into the sport because everything is meant to be exactly regulation standard and the best part about this game is that they even took into account the magnus force and air resistance so that you could make the most realistic spins on the ball as possible. This game took a lot of work and thought, which resulted in a game that can be used for practice in regulation games.

Gameplay 4/5

The gameplay is very smooth and the developers are always attempting to update this game to make it better. There’s not much gameplay involved beyond the sport itself and it easily achieves this. For $9.99, this game is one of the best on the market for a sports game.

Overall Rating: 4/5

While this may be one of the first of many sports games to come along, I look forward to playing this game for a long time to come. Perhaps they could add a tournament mode or weird games like four players playing two different games on the same table in a four-way manner. Either way, this game is definitely one you might want to pick up if you want to stay in shape.
