This Week’s VR Game Roundup — Build, Volley, and Hunt!

Bocce VR

Bocce isn’t just for old people living in a retirement home! It’s one of the most relaxing and engaging games around, and you can play it inside with Bocce VR. Set inside the stadium of a bocce club, which apparently exist, you can play bocce just like you can in your backyard. Inside, of course, you don’t have to worry about mud or stepping in dog poop.

Fitness Potential

Just like in real bocce, you’ll be swinging your arms forward to throw bocce balls in Bocce VR. The controllers aren’t as heavy as the real thing, but you can swing them harder to launch the ball farther. Depending on your skill, you just might succeed, but it will take patience and luck if you want to win. Bocce VR is compatible with room-scale VR setups for an even more engaging experience.

Volleyball Fever

If you have a real fever, you probably shouldn’t be exercising. If you have a Volleyball Fever, however, you know the clear solution is to play volleyball. Just like in real volleyball, Volleyball Fever lets you make serves and clutch shots against four opponents. The game supports a variety of heights, and with computer-controlled teammates and opponents, you can start playing immediately.

Fitness Potential

Volleyball Fever involves many of the same motions as real volleyball. You can hit the ball low in order to pass it to a teammate. If they pass it your way, you can attempt to spike it over to the other side of the net. When they knock if back over, you must be quick to deflect it before you let it hit the sand. With accuracy and proper timing, you can learn many of the skills you’d need  to play a real game of volleyball.

Mech League Hunting

If you think you have what it takes to be the top bounty hunter in the Galaxy, then check out Mech League Hunting. The VR-compatible shooter is a fast-paced science-fiction game with cooperative support. You can play missions in cooperative mode or alone as you destroy mech bots. You’ll even be able to customize your character with gear as you play. You’ll have to watch out on the hunt, as enemies are dangerous. Though available on Oculus Rift at the moment, we’ve heard reports that this version is experiencing issues.

Fitness Potential

Using the tracked motion controllers for your headset, you’ll have to quickly aim to take out the enemies you see on the screen. This will allow you to hit at targets above or below your position as you soar through the air or run underneath. Depending on your speed, you could find this quicker or more engaging than traditional aiming.

Fast and Low

VR shooters typically have you killing as many enemies as possible, as is the case with the above game. Fast and Low, however, is a police-themed shooter that rewards reaction and patience as much as pure shooting ability. As one of two cops, you enter each scenario and attempt to arrest or neutralize various targets. Some will be compliant, while others will open fire.

Fitness Potential

Fast and Low features free-locomotion, giving you options for how you move. One of these is arm-swinging, providing you with a more intense workout as you make your way around each level. The weapons you fire will do damage based on your aim, requiring dexterity in addition to blind reflexes. A friend can join in via asymmetric multiplayer, and you can add more or fewer enemies to change the challenge level.

Mall Town

We don’t think building a mall sounds very fun in the real world, but Mall Town has other ideas for VR. It’s your job to reignite the spirit of a small town by building a new mall. Several mall-themed mini-games are included to help you earn rewards, and you can adjust the layout as you see fit.

Fitness Potential

Oddly enough, mall designers really like to throw things. Several of Mall Town’s mini-games including a throwing element, either to stock a shelf or move boxes around in a room. There is also a slingshot mini-game, and you may even need to put out a fire using an extinguisher. With any luck, your hard work will lead to a revitalized virtual economy!
