RealFit Has Released in Early Access on Steam

While most VR games might ask you to perform certain tasks that aren’t inherently related to standard work out activities — Beat Saber, Phantom: Covert Ops, Iron Man VR — the benefits that come with being active are still ever-present.  However, the latest game that has hit the VR space today is looking to apply real bodyweight exercises that could translate over to everyday life.

Releasing in early access today, RealFit is a game that is meant to teach users standard workout routines that can help you stay in shape. Developed by London-based studio RealFit VR, the game utilizes a character model that stands in front of players to show them how to perform different exercises. Most of the routines are ones you might be familiar with and ask players to perform activities such as jumping jacks, lunges, and squats.

However, while RealFit might focus on teaching its users these bodyweight workouts, there are still plenty of mini-games packed in to ensure that it’s a fun experience. Furthermore, the game also tracks your in-game routines and can help give you various statistics that will let you perform better in the future.

Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that RealFit is only an early access product and currently isn’t content-complete. The developers behind the project have stated that it comes with “a minimal set of core features” but it still “lacks polish and refinement of its exercise guidance and tracking.” That said, with added feedback from RealFit’s burgeoning community, the studio plans to continue to expand on the game in the coming months before its 1.0 release. For now, RealFit VR says it expects this early access phase to last anywhere between one and two years.

In my own opinion, RealFit looks to be pretty basic at the moment, but the workouts that it is offering seem to be well-designed. Not only that, but unlike some other titles in the VR space, RealFit looks to be encouraging you to keep all areas of your body in shape. While games like Supernatural might be a ton of fun to play and can help you generate a good sweat, the activities you’re performing mainly deal with just moving your hands and arms. Conversely, RealFit is trying to get your whole body involved, which is a very smart idea. Other fitness-based VR titles would be smart to try and emulate this as well.

RealFit is available for purchase now on Steam, and while it normally retails for $19.99, it’s currently 10% off and is available for $17.99 until September 4. According to the game’s listing, it’s presently only compatible with Oculus Rift headsets as well.
